Hello again from Dana & Carl and THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO. We know a lot of folks have donated generously to the Red Cross and other worthy charities to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We certainly want to encourage anyone who can to donate whatever they can to this cause, and we don't wish to take a dime away from that effort.
However, for those of us who can spare just a little bit extra, there are two extended friends of TIRnRR who were affected directly by this disaster, and they can also use your help. Susan Cowsill, best known of course as a member of THE COWSILLS, lost her home and possessions to Katrina; her brother Barry is still missing, and we pray he is recovered safely, and soon. Rebekah Zornes, a friend of long-time TIRnRR pal (and former COCKEYED GHOST frontguy) Adam Marsland, also lost everything, and will be trying to pick up her pieces as well. These are not the most tragic stories you'll hear in Katrina's wake, not by a long shot, but they are friends of friends of Dana & Carl, so we turn to you.
Give to a reputable charity to help the victims of Katrina, and give generously. Then, if you can afford to do more, consider helping Susan and Rebekah. For example: if everyone who receives this e-mail were to scrape together as little as $10, and give a fiver apiece to Susan and Rebekah, they'd each raise over $2500. We have perspective; we know there a million broken hearts and worse in the South right now, and we know that many of you may be tapped out, or that you may have other plans to help where you can. But some of you will respond to this plea, and every little bit's gotta help.
And we thank you for whatever you can do.
This week's show began with a glance back at this country's last great disaster, as we reprised our pal Lizzy in New York City's 9/11 request for ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS, and "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding?" We played a great new track from local boy TIM ANTHONY, bid farewell to everyone's Little Buddy Bob Denver, celebrated "Highway Lines" by MANNIX as this week's Coolest Song Inna...er, GREATEST RECORD EVER MADE (our enthusiasm tempered by Joe Mannix's recent announcement that he'll be retiring from the music biz; his final album is due out shortly), and played requests for THE HEATS, THE MOST, THE BLONDES and THE FLASHCUBES. God bless you all; this is what rock 'n' roll radio sounded like on a Sunday night in Syracuse this week.
